Traffic fatalities remain high in cities and counties across the country. The Governors Highway Safety Association estimates that over 7,100 pedestrians died in vehicle collisions in 2024 while 1,166 bicyclists were killed on the road, according to the League of American Bicyclists.
Local authorities are turning to technology tools such as automated speed and red light cameras, artificial intelligence and connected vehicles to improve road safety and help reduce injuries and fatalities. These technologies can also improve traffic flow and clear the road for emergency vehicles.
