A light-rail line on a floating bridge, a bus rapid transit line through the heart of Las Vegas and a subway extension in Los Angeles are among the transit projects that have opened this year. More are on the way, aiming to begin service in 2026.

In total, about 150 miles of new fixed-guideway transit lines are expected to open this year across the U.S., Canada and Mexico, compared to over 240 miles in 2016. Some cities are choosing less expensive and more flexible bus rapid transit over light rail projects, Yonah Freemark, a researcher at the Urban Institute and creator of the transit analysis site The Transport Politic, told Smart Cities Dive.
